In 2001, the National Post identified Belinda as the most powerful businesswoman in Canada; and, in the same year, the World Economic Forum named her a "Global Leader of Tomorrow." In 2002, she was ranked #2 by Fortune magazine in its list of the world's most powerful women in business, and named one of Canada's "Top 40 Under 40," an annual awards competition that honours the country's top business innovators less than 40 years of age. In April 2004, Time Magazine ranked Belinda as one of the world's 100 most influential people. She is among the world's richest women (2005). Two children (with Walker), Nikki and Frank. In 2002, Fortune magazine placed Stronach at No. 2 on its ranking of the most powerful women in business outside of the U.S. She was instrumental in the movement to unite two Canadian political parties, the Reform and the Progressive Conservative parties - and in the fall of 2003, rumours grew that she would run for the party's leadership with the backing of Conservative heavyweights such as former prime minister Brian Mulroney and former Ontario premier Bill Davis. Belinda announced her resignation as President and CEO of Magna on January 20, 2004 to seek election to represent the riding of Newmarket-Aurora and coincidentally run for the leadership of the new Conservative Party of Canada (the amalgamation of the Reform and Progressive Conservative parties. She came second in the race for Conservative Party of Canada leader; and won in a close race to represent the riding of Newmarket-Aurora, Ontario. On May 17, 2005, she "crossed the floor" of the House of Commons to join the Liberal Party of Canada and was appointed Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development, and given the portfolio of Minister responsible for Democratic Renewal by Prime Minister Paul Martin.

She is a member of the Dean's Council at the John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University, and the Dean's Advisory Council at the Joseph L. Rotman School of Management, University of Toronto. In 2003, Belinda received an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree from the Michael G. DeGroote School of Business, McMaster University.

In 1985 she dropped out of York University's business school after one year and joined Magna in a management role. In February 2001, she was appointed CEO of Magna, replacing her former husband, and almost one year later also became its president (January 2002). She was a member of the board of directors of Magna from 1988 until 2004.

Daughter of Frank Stronach, founder and chairman of Magna International, a conglomerate consisting of one of the world's largest automotive parts manufacturers, aircraft parts manufacturer, and offshoots in mining and entertaining (racetracks and gaming ventures). Her first husband was a senior executive and later CEO of Magna International.

In 2001 she met and became close friends with former U.S. president Bill Clinton at a charity golf event.
