On 19 January 2002, in a playoff game against the Oakland Raiders on a snow-covered field, Vinatieri kicked a 45-yard field goal that tied the game at 13-13. The Patriots won the game 16-13 (on another Vinatieri field goal) and went on to win their first Super Bowl. Reliant Stadium would prove a personal house of horrors for Vinitiari again in Superbowl XXXVIII against the Carolina Panthers. Vinitiari missed a FG try and a second try was blocked by Panthers player Shane Burton, both in the game's first quarter, but as in Superbowl XXXVI he kicked the winning FG at the end of regulation.
