A positive review of his appearance in an off-Broadway production, "The Chili Queen", caught the attention of a casting director who called him in to read for two films on the same day. He got both roles, "Crazy in Alabama" and "The General's Daughter". Lettered in three varsity sports--basketball, football and track--in high school. His first brush with acting was in a University of Minnesota acting class for non-theater majors, but by the time he left college, his professor was encouraging him to go to New York as an actor.
