When she was young, Cayne`s parents moved from California to Maui to teach at a Waldorf school and the family lived on campus Candis was the 2001 winner of the Miss Continental U.S.A. national pageant for female impersonators, held every Labor Day in Chicago, Illinois. Candis was born as Brendan McDaniel in Hawaii. Brendan transformed himself into "Candis Cayne" and became one of the United States` most popular and sought-after female impersonators. Her participation in Wigstock led to her being asked to do choreography for To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar, and led to a role in the movie Stonewall.

A classically trained dancer, Candis has thrilled audiences from coast-to-coast with her amazing gift for dance, choreography and glamour.

Candis is the first transgender actress to have a recurring role on a prime-time series.

Candis first made a name for herself at the famed NYC gay hot-spot "Boy Bar", where her performances drew raves.

In New York, Cayne started performing as `Candis Cayne` at Boy Bar, a gay bar in early 1990s New York City and participating in Wigstock, the annual drag festival in the East Village

Cayne began transitioning in 1996.[citation needed] In 1997 Cayne co-starred in the RuPaul music video A Little Bit of Love with fellow drag icon Jazzmun.
