Freema studied for a time at Radford University in the United States. (tv.com) When she auditioned for Doctor Who, she was told she was auditioning for Torchwood, before they told her the truth. Freema had also auditioned for a role in Doctor Who called Esme. This character was originally written into the episodes Rise Of The Cybermen/The Age Of Steel but was abandoned to explore Mrs Moore much further. Her mother, Azar, and her father, Osei, separated when she was a child. In July 2006, she appeared on an episode of the new "Doctor Who" series, and the producers were so impressed with her performance that they offered her the role of Martha Jones on the show's upcoming third season, debuting sometime in the Spring of 2007.
