His father is a minister and his uncle is a priest. He once considered entering the seminary Special commendation for the Ian Charleson Award 1994 (Best performance by an actor under 30 in a classical role). He was kicked out of The Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama before joining the Glasgow Citizens Theatre where he performed for a number of years. He also performed with The Royal Shakespeare Company, Royal National Theatre, The Almeida, Liverpool Playhouse, Babel Theatre Company, 7:84 Theatre Company (Scotland) to name a few...
